The front door needs attention, October 31, 2025 (aka Halloween)

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. There's little left in the garden now—really only the super hardy plants like kale, and several of the herbs. All of the more tender plants have decided that their moment of glory is past. The trees are also in a state of transition. As of today, most of the leaves are down and the two weeks or so that we had of brilliant colors are past. A few trees are hanging onto their yellow leaves, but they can't holdout much longer.

There have been lots of chores to do to get ready for winter. I've blown out the water lines to the garden and the irrigation lines around the house. Linda has pulled most of the dead plants out of the garden beds and we've stored the carrots, onions and squash that we will continue to eat for the next couple of months. I also put the scooters to rest in the barn and I put the power washer to sleep for winter. Linda has kept our leaf blowers busy cleaning up around the house and down the driveway and paths.

Today's job has been replacing the bottom sweep on the front door to keep the winter snows out. And, since the front door had a slight squeak in the hinges, I decided to lubricate them while the door was off. That prompted Linda to check every door in the house and she came up another four that needed a little teflon attention on the hinge plates. It's not much, but Fall is a season of preparedness. We don't need to do nearly as much as our ancestors did to get through the coming short days of the year, but there are still a few tasks...

About Us

Linda and I built our retirement home in the northern Michigan woods that my family has owned for nearly 60 years. We replaced our old family cabin (full of warm memories) with our new home about 5 years ago. Now we are living amongst the trees and animals of this special place.
